LEGAL LIFE IS GETTING EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE
Hate your lawyer now? Read through this and you will groan even louder and harder.
Throughout my home state of Idaho, they raised the court filing fees several years ago to fund a huge change. The Courts will, in most case, no longer take paper. We all must file court documents electronically. This process has required a major transformation in how clerk and staff operate as well as your lawyers and their staff. This process requires time for training and practice for lawyers and staff; which time must be recouped from.
Well, you know, you, the paying client. The e-mail and other electronic transmissions will escalate which in some cases will require larger servers and more conscientious attention, organizing and categorizing data.
Of course, we will need to feel sorry for all the runner /errand staff jobs that will be lost for those ambitious summer high school and college folk. They are no longer needed to file papers at the court at the end of every day.
By now you are likely familiar with all the new “chip” readers for credit cards. There may also be new laws regarding who is accountable how for credit card security breaches; which of course requires more liability insurance premiums imposed upon lawyers. Credit card processing fees are increasing along with all the “changes”.
AND WORST OF ALL
There is a new federal enactment (the FLSA for those who are interested in the exact statute) coming before the end of this year that mandates salary levels for many lawyer staff, which mandates in most cases will increase the salary levels which in turn increase lawyer overhead. Which, in turn, increases your costs for your lawyer that are absolutely unavoidable!
Okay, hated lawyer, what can I do about all this? The only actions you can take are to plan ahead more with your legal affairs, strategize now with your lawyer and seek even harder to avoid litigation.
