HAMMER’S Hunches on one possible reason why we hate lawyers explained.
We are not required to hire a doctor. We are not required to hire a mechanic. We are not required to hire an electrician. We are not required to hire a lawn boy. We choose to pay these people because it is acceptable that they “make money off of other people’s problems.”
However our courts say we are required “to know the law”, and that “ignorance of the law is no excuse!” This claimed requirement is s-t-o-o-p-i-d when we consider how many millions of laws may apply to us. This is especially true when we can be subject to 1) international laws, 2) federal laws, 3) state laws, 4) county laws AND 5) city laws! (This does not count the even more “regulations” that have “the force of law.”)
Sooo… if we are required to be educated and attend school between ages 6 and 16 for free (O.K., on the tax payer dole), then if we are required to know and apply the laws, then should not lawyers also be free?
Another hunch I have is the horrifically unrealistic expectations society has on lawyers, similar to how society has thrust unrealistic expectations on insurance companies. (Fault/cause for such is a topic for another day). Television, hope, anxiety other people’s stories can cast an unbelievable expectation on how effective and efficient a lawyer can be in many situations. These expectations are often unattainable.
These are only a few hunches I have on why some (many?) people hate lawyers. HOWEVER, CAN IT BE OK TO HATE MY LAWYER?
In my forthcoming blog series, you will learn (from my 29 years’ experience as a practicing lawyer) many helpful, “super simplified” tips and ideas that help YOU answer this question and help YOU understand how to deal with lawyers and the legal system.
